What Scripture Says About Itself

As we study the Scriptures, it is crucial to consider our beliefs about them. Some view the Scriptures as merely human inspirations in the quest to find God, with authors writing on various inspirational themes. Personally, I believe that God inspired the Scriptures, leading men to record them, and that in their original languages and manuscripts, they were infallible. It is essential to examine what Scripture claims about itself.

To that end, here are several verses from the Old and New Testaments that affirm Scripture as the Word of God, quoted from the NASB1995 translation:

Old Testament

  1. Isaiah 40:8 ~ The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.
  2. Psalm 119:89 ~ Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven.
  3. Psalm 119:105 ~ Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
  4. Psalm 119:160 ~ The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.
  5. Proverbs 30:5 ~ Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

New Testament

  1. Matthew 4:4 ~ But He answered and said, ‘It is written, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”
  2. Matthew 24:35 ~ Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.
  3. John 1:1 ~ In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
  4. John 10:35 ~ If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken).
  5. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 ~ All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
  6. Hebrews 4:12 ~ For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
  7. 1 Thessalonians 2:13 ~ For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.
  8. 2 Peter 1:20-21 ~ But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

Conclusion ~ I encourage you to take time with these verses. Read them carefully, click the links to explore them in context, and open your heart to the Holy Spirit’s teaching. Let Him reveal more of the truthfulness, reliability, and enduring faithfulness of God’s Word. As you do, may you grow in confidence that Scripture is not merely the words of men, but the very breath of God Himself, given for our life and guidance.
